After the landmark 1000th ‘Big Band Special’, programmes 1005 and 1006 turned out to be pretty special, too. They were extracts from a concert at the Queen’s Theatre, Edinburgh, in August, when the BBC Big Band accompanied US clarinettist Ken Peplowski in a tribute to Benny Goodman. Sparked by the dynamic drumming of Chris Dagley, they played as well as I’ve heard them, which is saying some- thing, while Sheila Tracy in her closing studio link (she wasn’t at the concert) accurately summed up Peplowski’s as “a quite spectacular performance”. He even managed to inject new life into that overplayed warhorse Sing, Sing, Sing.
